Deku

The Deku are a race of intelligent fey plant life that are known for their habit to choose the side of a fight based on personal gain rather than loyalties. Some Deku may be more than willing to help strangers, while others may simply attack on approach.

DEKU TRAITS

Fleet of foot and irritable, Deku share the following traits in common.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Age. Deku grow to maturity within about 10 years – though they count their birth cycles in seasons, thus reaching maturity at “40 seasons of age.” They tend to live well over 100 years, and a few seasons have recalled over 700 seasons.
Alignment. Deku are notorious for being fiercely territorial, and are more likely to attack intruders than speak with them. While there are indeed evil Deku, the vast majority are neutral in alignment. The culture as a whole prioritizes individual needs and desires over the supposed dichotomy between good and evil.
Size. Deku are between 3 and 4 feet tall and average about 40 pounds. Your size is Small.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet. Despite your size, you are exceptionally fast.
Darkvision. Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Barkskin. Your hard wooden flesh grants you a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
Plant Body. For the purposes of spells and abilities, you are considered a sentient plant. You are still susceptible to disease and poison. You do not need to eat or breathe.
Instead of sleeping, you can rest in direct sunlight for 4 hours each day. You are fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Hylian and Deku. The Deku language, which has no written component, is easily recognizable by its clicking and clunking sounds, which sounds like drumming on hollow nuts.
Subrace. Three subraces of Deku are found among the forests of Hyrule: Butler Scrubs, Green Scrubs, and Mad Scrubs. Choose one of these subraces.

BUTLER SCRUBS

Also known as Business Scrubs, Butlers tend to be more sociable than their more woodland-based kin. As a Butler, you are very comfortable in cities and among other races. Whether trying to earn rupees or explore the kingdom, you revel in rubbing elbows with the bigger folk

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1.
Linguist. You know 2 extra languages of your choice.
Skill Versatility. You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice.

GREEN SCRUBS

The most common variety of Deku, Greens also tend to be the most reclusive. As a Green Scrub you treasure the natural world you are a part of, and would much rather be left in peace than be swayed by delusions of grandeur.

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Nut Pellet. You can use your action to conjure and spit a wooden pellet at your foes. You make a ranged attack roll, with a range of up to 60 feet. On a successful hit, you deal 1d8 bludgeoning damage. The damage increases to 2d8 at 6th level, 3d8 at 11th level, and 4d8 at 16th level.
You can use your pellet attack a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier, after which you can’t use it again until you complete a long rest.
Speak with Small Beasts. Through sounds and gestures, you can communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts. Green Scrubs love animals and often keep squirrels, badgers, rabbits, moles, woodpeckers, and other creatures as beloved pets.

MAD SCRUBS

The most violent – and thankfully least populous – variety of Deku, Mad Scrubs are aggressive and short-tempered little creatures. You take the defense of your lands seriously, and will destroy any who dare threaten your home or people.

Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1.
Fire Pellet. You can use your action to conjure and spit a wooden pellet at your foes. You make a ranged attack roll, with a range of up to 60 feet. On a successful hit, you deal 1d8 fire damage. The damage increases to 2d8 at 6th level, 3d8 at 11th level, and 4d8 at 16th level.
You can use your pellet attack a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier, after which you can’t use it again until you complete a long rest.
Fury of the Small. When you damage a creature with an attack or a spell and the creature’s size is larger than yours, you can cause the attack or spell to deal extra damage to the creature. The extra damage equals your level. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
